Baptism

Joining in the Death, Burial,  and Resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Baptism is one of the most meaningful steps of obedience for a follower of Jesus. Throughout the New Testament, those who placed their faith in Christ publicly expressed that decision through baptism. It is a powerful symbol of the new life we have in Him—our old life buried and a new life begun through faith in Jesus. If you are ready to take this step, we would love to celebrate with you. If you still have questions or would like to better understand what baptism means, we invite you to explore the information below.

WHAT IS BAPTISM?

Baptism is participating in the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.\
(Romans 6:3-4)

It is through baptism that we are clothed with Christ.

So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.
(Galatians 3:26-27)

Throughout the New Testament, baptism is the expected immediate response to saving faith for every believer.

Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit."
(Acts 2:38)

It is what Jesus commanded disciple-makers to do when they make disciples.

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.
(Matthew 28:19-20)

Should I be Baptized?

The question you should ask yourself is, "Am I prepared to follow Jesus as my Lord?"

You should demonstrate a clear understanding that this is a life-long commitment (like marriage). Your life is no longer your own.

For Christ’s love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died. And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again.
(2 Corinthians 5:14-15)

WHAT WE BELIEVE ABOUT BAPTISM

First and foremost, we at QuadCity Christian Church believe salvation is a free gift of God offered out of His grace. Salvation comes only through faith and not works. As such, we believe there is no particular human work that can earn anyone’s way into heaven.

We believe faith is more than just belief. Saving faith requires trust in God’s word such that the believer is willing to go beyond the cognitive understanding of the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ to actual obedience to the teachings and commands of Jesus Christ. That obedience includes baptism as our own spiritual participation in the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. (Romans 6:3-4)

Our mission at QuadCity Christian Church is to "make more and better disciples of Jesus. Everywhere. Always." Jesus Christ Himself instructed us to make disciples by baptizing them and teaching them to obey everything he commanded (Matthew28:19-20). Just as the apostles of Jesus Christ and the early church were faithful to Jesus Christ, we strive to do the same. We believe God intended baptism to be the first biblical expression of personal faith by one saved by the grace of God. Because this is a personal act of faith that requires trust in God’s word, we do not infant baptize. We also believe baptism should be done by immersion in water because it best reflects the meaning of the original Greek word in the New Testament, “baptizo.” Further, immersion in water best symbolizes the significance of baptism being a believer’s death, burial, and resurrection in Christ.

KIDS AND BAPTISM

We love seeing kids place their faith in Jesus and begin learning what it means to follow Him. In Scripture, baptism is an important first step of obedience for those who have trusted in Christ, and that includes children who are able to understand the gospel and express their desire to follow Jesus.

Two of the most common questions parents ask are: “Is my child ready to be baptized?” and “Is my child old enough?” Ultimately, we believe parents are in the best position to help discern this. No one knows your child better than you do, and only you can best recognize whether your child truly understands what it means to trust in Jesus and follow Him.

To help families walk through this step thoughtfully, we recommend that parents go through the Forever Treasure study from Southeast Christian Church with their child before baptism. This resource helps guide meaningful conversations about faith, the gospel, and what baptism means. Pick up a copy in QuadCity Kids on Sunday or purchase one below.

If you would like to talk further about your child’s readiness for baptism, our team would be glad to meet with you and help walk through any questions together.

ARE YOU READY TO BE BAPTIZED?

Choosing to follow Jesus is the most important decision a person can make, and baptism is the first step of obedience that follows that decision. Throughout the New Testament, people who placed their faith in Jesus were baptized as a way of identifying with Him and celebrating the new life they had received. If you have trusted in Jesus and are ready to take this step, we would love to celebrate with you. Baptism is not about having everything figured out—it is about taking the next step in following Christ.

We are always prepared for baptisms at QuadCity. Whether during a Sunday service with your church family celebrating alongside you or at another time during the week, we would love to help you take this step. If you are ready to be baptized, click the button below to fill out a short form and one of our pastors will follow up with you. If you still have questions about baptism, we encourage you to read through our Baptism FAQs below.

BAPTISM FAQs

When should I get baptized?

As soon as you believe, repent, and confess, you should make plans for baptism.

What if I was baptized years ago but have since recommitted my life to Christ?

Baptism is meant to mark the beginning of a person’s faith in Jesus. If you were baptized after placing your faith in Christ, there is typically no need to be baptized again. However, if you were baptized before truly understanding or trusting in Jesus, you may choose to be baptized as a meaningful step of obedience now.

What if I was sprinkled and not immersed?

At QuadCity we baptize by immersion, which we believe best reflects the practice described in the New Testament. The Greek word most often used for baptism is baptizō, meaning to immerse, while rhantizō means to sprinkle. For this reason, we strongly encourager those who were sprinkled earlier in life to be baptized by immersion as a step of obedience as a disciple of Jesus.

What if I was baptized at another church?

As long as you were baptized by immersion in the name of Jesus Christ, it is not a requirement that you be “re-baptized” at QuadCity. Your baptism is into Christ, not a local church. However, we ask every member to repent of sin, confess Jesus as Lord and Savior, and be baptized by immersion as the New Testament directs.

What if I'm nervous about being baptized?

That’s completely normal. Many people feel nervous about being baptized, especially when doing it in front of others. Our team will walk with you through the process, explain what to expect, and help make the experience meaningful and comfortable.

We are always prepared for baptisms at QuadCity. Our baptismal is ready and warm, and we have everything needed—including clothing—for baptisms at any time. While we love celebrating baptisms during Sunday services, we can also arrange a baptism any day of the week for those who are ready to take this step of obedience.

Can my family be baptized together?

Yes. If each family member fully understands the meaning of baptism and each one believes and has repented.

What about infant baptism?

Some churches practice infant baptism by sprinkling. This is different from the baptism talked about in the Bible, which was only for those old enough to believe, repent, and confess Jesus personally. We would suggest that now with what you know is taught biblically, you should be obedient to the command of Jesus through baptism.

Baptism and Membership at QuadCity:

At QuadCity, it is a membership requirement to be baptized by immersion even though you may have been sprinkled as an infant and/or confirmed as a child.
